The DQ380 (0DE) is a new smaller variant of the DQ500 (0BH) especially designed for the Chinese market. The DQ381 (0GC) is a further development on the DQ380 and comes in several new vehicles where previous models were equipped with the DQ250 or DQ500.

The DQ380 (0DE) transmission is introduced in 2015 for the Chinese market as a smaller variant of the DQ500. The DQ500 with identification 0BH has provided the basis for the design and function of this new gearbox model. The DQ380 has been specifically designed for front wheel drive cars with an engine torque up to 420Nm like the Chinese Golf 7 GTI and VW Magotan.

The aim of continuously reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions made it necessary for Volkswagen AG to develop a more efficient version of this transmission for the European market. This resulted in 2017 to the introduction of the DQ381 (0GC) gearbox. It has been designed for front and all-wheel drive cars with an engine torque up to 420Nm like the Arteon, Golf 7.5R and Audi S3 facelift.
