Repaired or new gearbox?

Everybody who has experience with mechatronics knows about the complex issues like rough shifting or jutting from start. Repairing a mechatronic is known to be a poor solution. Permanent fault codes are gone after repair, but drive ability or smoothness in shifting may still be poor. Another example is clutch slip causing vibration in the drive train.

After repairing the mechatronic some of these problems may still be present. Therefore, we strongly advise to buy an exchange unit. If the old problem is still present, which the exact same symptoms, then you know for sure mechatronic is not the part causing the troubles.

With a mechatronic “repair” you get the same unit in return. So if the problem is still present, there is always a change the repair of the mechatronic has not been done correctly, or it was impossible to repair the unit.

The mechatronic contain 100-200 components and high-tech print board. The DQ250 print board cannot be exchanged due to its buildup so a good complete rebuild is simply not possible.

Customers expecting to save money bought a rebounded unit with new values. It ends with a lot of troubles and high investments, resulting in buying a new unit from us. You’re warned!

If you decide to do the repair for yourself, we can ship you the parts. Most of the time revised clutches can be delivered quick. You don’t have to return your old clutch. Factory updates rarely solve shifting issues, sometimes even cause more issues. This update will take care of that.
DSG Software update

Complete oil change with original VAG DSG oil and original VAG filter, including assembly. Most of the time this will not solve any issues with the DSG, but it is necessary maintenance to prevent any damages to your DSG. Duration of the repair is around two hours. ACTION! Every year we diagnose around 1000 gearboxes, and therefore we have the best knowledge and experience about DSG and engines. Instead of just looking at the error codes, we look closely at the numbers and measurements. Because of our experience, we are being able to find out what the issue may be while going for a test drive. The downside is that we have huge development costs. The only way to re-earn this, is using our fair-deal policy. Which means charging the customer €149,- (incl. tax) diagnosis costs. But if you let us repair the car, you will get the €149,- returned. If you decide to do the repair yourself of let someone else do it, then you pay the €149,- for our diagnosis, knowledge and time. Which in the end is still cheaper than, unnecessary oil changes, learning procedures, meaningless software updates etc. If you decide to get our DSG software or chiptuning, it will mean you get the €149,- refunded as well.

Gearbox repair FAQ

Caution is necessary, the wrong choice is easily made. Though TVS-Engineering / DSG-Dokter is the first and the biggest DSG-specialist, it is not the only one anymore. Meanwhile there a several other companies who say they are DSG-specialists. Every week we are confronted with issues caused by other “specialists”, who obvious lack the right knowledge. Therefore we try to help, and show you what to look out for.

Are they going to repair your old gearbox, or are you getting a revised one?

Our advice: Always get a new gearbox, or at least a fully revised one.

Is the repair only regarding to the gearbox, or the mechatronic and clutch as well?

When a repair is done, most of the time only the bearings are replaced and no other parts, like for instance the gears itself. The reason for this is, that these parts are hard to get. But this means the repair or revision is never done right. Besides that, it is important to know if the clutch is replaced with a new one or revised, as well as the mechatronic. We always advice to replace the clutch with a new one, revised clutches are no good because only the friction material is replaced.

With or without assembly?

We see a lot of problems with people who get their new gearbox shipped, and then let a mechanic assembly the new gearbox in their car. The problem with this is, most mechanics haven’t replaced a DSG gearbox before. Every type of DSG gearbox asks for a different way of assembly. After assembly follows the even more complex part, phase two which consists of programming, encoding, and adapting of the mechatronic and clutch. Therefore, we strongly advise to replace your gearbox by one of our experienced mechanics, or one of our partners. (Worldwide)

It is not possible to drive your car to us?

When it is not possible to drive the car anymore, we have the option to let it be transported to our facility. These transport services are external from TVS-Engineering and are therefore not included in the standard warranty conditions.

Order on chassis number

The gearbox code is not relevant! The gearbox is a complex part, this means it is specific to the chassis number and needs to be ordered on it. Only this way you can get the right hardware version and software version. The wrong software version can cause issues which are hard to diagnose.
